NUKE WATCHDOG TO ASK "UNANSWERED QUESTIONS" AT SALEM
NRC INSPECTION MEETING
Representatives of the UNPLUG Salem Campaign will attend this
Tuesday's NRC "exit meeting", to be held at 1:00 PM at PSEG's Salem
Training Center, Chesnut Street, in Salem. At this meeting, the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission will review with PSEG the results of the NRC's recent
inspection of the Salem Nuclear Plants. As in all of these types of NRC
meetings, the public is only allowed to observe, not participate. At the
conclusion of these meetings, PSEG exits as fast as possible and some NRC
staffers remain for an "informal, off-the-record" session.
At the last exit meeting, UNPLUG
Salem members gagged themselves to protest the lack of democracy and citizen
input into this process. At this exit meeting, the UNPLUG Salem Campaign
attendees will be holding small signs listing 8 major safety and health concerns
not addressed by the NRC inspection, and will distribute flyers to all attendees
listing these 8 concerns in detail.
The UNPLUG Salem Campaign urges PSEG and NRC to answer these
concerns on the record at this exit meeting.
"Since 9-11," said Norm Cohen, Coordinator of the 108
organization-strong UNPLUG Salem Campaign, "because the three nuclear
plants on Artificial Island are terror targets, PSEG and NRC have a moral obligation
to answer the concerns
of the public, especially on issues of safety and public health."
The UNPLUG Salem Campaign is a network of 108
organizations, national, regional, local, environmental, religious, student,
political and civic, who's aims are: (1) To shut down the aging and dangerous
Salem Nuclear Plants; (2) To Stop the Salem Nuke Fish Slaughter, by requiring
PSEG to obey the Clean Water Act and install cooling towers; (3) To act as a
safety and public health watchdog; and (4) To promote alternative forms of
energy.

TOP 8 ISSUES THE NRC SHOULD HAVE INSPECTED, BUT DIDN'T:
8: ALL THREE NUKE PLANTS CONTINUE TO AGE AND EMBRITTLE. PSEG AND NRC JUST ROLL
THE DICE. THE UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN SAYS: "TOO MANY RISKS - SHUT 'EM
DOWN".
7: SALEM 1 AND 2 STILL HAVE FIRE BARRIERS THAT DON'T STOP FIRE, FIRE BARRIER
SEALS THAT CATCH FIRE,
AND CABLE SEPARATION PROBLEMS. NRC AND PSEG DON'T CARE, BUT THE UNPLUG
SALEM CAMPAIGN DOES.
6: SALEM COUNTY HAS HIGH RATES OF CANCER AND IMMUNE SYSTEM RELATED DISEASES. NRC
AND PSEG DON'T CARE; UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN DOES.
5: WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE HUMAN ERROR PROBLEMS AT ALL 3 NUKES? WHAT HAPPENED
WITH PSEG'S SO -CALLED HUMAN PERFORMANCE TEAM? NRC AND PSEG JUST
"PENCIL WHIPPED" THE PROBLEM. THE UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN WANTS REAL
ANSWERS.
4: ARE SALEM 1 AND 2 DAVIS-BESSIES IN THE MAKING? WILL WE LOSE WILMINGTON?
HAS ANYONE CHECKED THE REACTOR VESSEL HEAD? NRC AND PSEG ARE ROLLING THE
DICE. THE UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN SAYS: "FIX THE PROBLEM NOW!"
3: WE KNOW PSEG AND NRC DON'T CARE, BUT SOMEONE SHOULD: SALEM 1 AND 2 CONTINUE
TO SLAUGHTER BILLIONS OF FISH AND MARINE LIFE EVERY DAY. THE UNPLUG SALEM
CAMPAIGN SAYS: "COOLING TOWERS NOW!
PSEG CAN WELL AFFORD IT AND COOLING TOWERS MEAN MORE JOBS FOR SALEM
COUNTY".
2: NRC AND PSEG DON'T CARE. WE SAY: REPLACE SALEM 2'S STEAM GENERATOR BEFORE IT
RUPTURES. NRC AND PSEG WANT TO RISK A MULTIPLE TUBE RUPTURE, THE UNPLUG SALEM
CAMPAIGN DOESN'T. WE SAY: "PUT THE SAFETY OF CITIZENS FIRST BEFORE
CORPORATE PROFITS."
1: ALL THREE NUKES ARE TERRORIST TARGETS THAT CAN'T WITHSTAND A 9-11 TYPE
ATTACK. HOPE CREEK'S SPENT FUEL POOL IS EXTREMELY VULNERABLE. NRC AND PSEG
REFUSE TO HARDEN SALEM 1 AND 2 AND REFUSE TO BUILD A CONTAINMENT AROUND HOPE
CREEK'S SPENT FUEL POOL. THE UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN SAYS: "EITHER
CLOSE DOWN THESE NUKES OR MAKE THEM SAFE. PEOPLE COUNT MORE THAN PROFITS."
