UNPLUG SALEM TO HOLD "SILENT GAGGED PROTEST"
OF NRC SALEM MEETING MONDAY
--- AND ---
UNPLUG TO PARTICIPATE IN
EVACUATION HEARINGS
NEW SAFETY CONCERNS TO BE
OUTLINED ON TUESDAY
A small group of UNPLUG Salem Campaign
members will engage in a "Silent Gagged Protest" at the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission's "Inspection Exit Meeting" to be held on
Monday, July 9th, 1:30 PM at Artificial Island, in the first building on the
left when you enter PSE&G property. The UNPLUG Salem Campaign will protest
the fact that this meeting is open to the public for "observation"
only. The public is NOT allowed to ask questions or make comments during the
meeting. It's a "dog and pony show", where NRC faces PSE&G on
stage, tells them everything at Salem is just great. When the meeting is over,
NRC stays for informal, off the record, thus pointless, discussion, and PSEG
flees the room to massage the media. The UNPLUG Salem Campaign will be there to
demand that these kinds of meetings stop, that the people be allowed to ask
questions and get answers on the record. NRC has no right to take away our
freedom of speech!
On Tuesday, July 10th, at 7:00 PM (with an
"informal meeting" at 6:00 PM) at the Salem County Courthouse, Market
St off of rt. 49, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will
hold its annual Radiological Division's Public Hearing on the Evacuation Plans
for Salem/Hope Creek. UNPLUG Salem's testimony last year did result in
some minor tweaking of the plan, and a commitment (not yet delivered) on
providing KI (Potassium Iodide) to people in the 10 mile zone. We will
attend this meeting to reinforce our position that no evacuation plan of the
Salem/Hope Creek area would ever work. Some of the people who gave testimony
last year and who received written responses from Jill Lipoti of the DEP, will
testify again this year.
At this meeting, the UNPLUG Salem Campaign will reveal new
safety concerns at Salem Units 1 and 2, and reveal our new requests of PSE&G
and the NRC.
