Barnwell’s nuclear waste heyday ending.

Site will be closed to most out-of-state waste beginning Tuesday

 

Future generation will someday have to clean up this mess the cost of which is not included when the proponents of nuclear power tell you how cheap and clean it is. And yet, this is only one site of many.

From the Mill tailings emitting radon 222  left over from the mining of Uranium, to the highlevel waste of spent fuel stored on the site of 104 nuclear reactors ( which will eventually have to be guarded virtually forever ) nobody has ever been able to calculate the total cost to future generations.

SNELLING — A page will turn Tuesday in Barnwell County , opening what could be a new chapter in South Carolina ’s decades-long relationship with nuclear waste.

With the start of the state’s July 1 fiscal year, the nuclear waste disposal facility in Barnwell County will no longer accept waste from across the country, as it has for nearly four decades.

. Its closure leaves many states scrambling to determine how they will dispose of their low-level radioactive waste. .
